The YMCA’s move to a new location is driven by the need to adapt to changing times and better meet the evolving needs of the community. Recent assessments—including a comprehensive market study, community surveys, and focus groups—have revealed the need for a larger, more accessible, and flexible space. This feedback informed the creation of Vision 2030, which outlines the development of a Healthy Living Campus. The new campus will expand childcare and early education services, enhance health and wellness offerings, and create space for collaborative partnerships—all designed to better serve residents of Northwest Illinois and increase the YMCA’s community impact.
Our new Healthy Living Campus will be located at 2900 W Pearl City Rd, Freeport currently know as Stewart Centre West.
- America City Bureau – They have provided guidance and support with the feasibility Study, Strategic Planning, Board Development, and Donor Development.
- Gro Development Inc. – Is providing Real Estate Development and Architectural designs
- A Taskforce comprised of The Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois leadership, current, and previous board members.
- Over 60 community leaders that took part in four focus groups
- 200+ survey respondents
Our intention is to have both an “Aquatic Facility” and Multi-sport gym, both of these will be additions to the current facility. Design and construction of the Aquatic Center and Multi-sport gym is included in phase 3.
Highland Athletes will have their own workout space as an integral part of Highland’s updated use of the current facility.
After the YMCA relocates, Highland Community College will assume full ownership and occupancy of both buildings. Any future use or plans for the buildings will be determined by Highland.
Construction on Phase 1 of the project is projected to start in May of 2026. Phase 1 involves renovating 20,000 square feet to establish a State-licensed childcare center that will accommodate 225 (up from 103) children from birth – Five years of age. This initiative aims to address the critical shortage of quality child care services in the region, supporting working families and contributing to the local economy.
